N64 Game #3/296: All Star Baseball '99
"The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball" - James Earl Jones (Field of Dreams)
I'll try to contain my nostalgia for this one as this was MY baseball game growing up! This one I have a lot of memories with, struggling with season mode, and destroying teams intentionally to see how high I could run up the score!
This game is TOUGH. It does make me appreciate how streamlined modern baseball games, like Super Mega Baseball (my current go-to baseball game), are. Hitting is very challenging, pitching is a bit easier, and fielding uses the Directional C buttons in the best way (I mean, the bases are already there)! This one could go into a full season, but I think I might play all the sports games in a category before deciding which one I will play a full season in! This game feels a bit slow as well, even the strike and ball calls feel a bit drawn out and take a good few seconds before you can jump to the next pitch.
Overall, I think my nostalgia for this one carries a lot of the weight. It's brutal in a way that I appreciate, complex in ways that can truly make an impact, and fun in exactly the way I remember. I look forward to continued play of this nostalgia!
